How it's made
This unique jewellery box has been handcrafted in an eco-friendly manner from water reed grass. This form of grass is found in abundance in the North East of India, where it is often referred to by its local name, Kauna. Water reed grass belongs to the family Cyperaceae, which is cultivated in the wetlands and marshes of the Imphal valley. Versatile and durable, this grass lends itself beautifully to weaving. The reed is first cut near the base of the plant and dried in the sun. It is also smoked to be preserved and stored for a longer time. The box is woven by interlacing the stalks with jute threads using basic tools and then transformed into boxes by the women of the Meitei community of Manipur. The kauna grass is cooling, soft, supple and spongy, making it easy to weave. This box features weaves that are extremely fine and sophisticated. They are reinforced with extra strips for strength. A kauna box is long lasting and suitable for rough use as well
