How it's made
This handcrafted curd setter with lid comes from the Pink City of Rajasthan, which is known for its spectacular hand-crafted and painted terracotta clay products. Terracotta is a strong, durable material made from clay that is also naturally resistant to mold and bacteria. Terracotta is usually made from a fairly coarse, porous type of clay. This is first sculpted, then fired until hard. In the ancient world, it was left to harden in the hot sun, then baked in primitive ovens created in the ashes of open fires. Each terracotta piece of art is created by a fascinating process with grace and dedication of the craftsmen and the time taken to make such a masterpiece is what makes it so valuable. The piece, after being left to dry is kept on top of combustible materials in a pit and fired. Mostly charcoal, wood or coconut shells are used for firing and the temperatures may range from 600 to 1000 deg C. The process is complete only after the pottery has been baked for more than two hours to ensure it is hard, strong and durable. Terracotta has been used in India for centuries. Traditionally, it was seen as a mystical material due to its combination of four of the five vital elements – air, earth, fire and water. It has been a mainstay of Indian construction and culture since the Indus Valley Civilization, which existed between 3300 and 1700 BC. Many ancient terracotta artifacts have been found in India, often depicting deities
